QUEENSTOWN TEAMS MAKE THE CUT FOR 2005 ADVENTURE WORLD RACING CHAMPIONSHIP |

April 19 2005: The 2005 Coast to Coast winner Richard Ussher heads a line up of Queenstown and Wanaka adventure racers selected to compete in the Adventure Racing World Championship in the Buller region of New Zealand’s West Coast on November 11 -19.
ARWorld Series director Geoff Hunt says four dedicated Queenstown teams have qualified and gained selection for the prestigious world event while Ussher will race in the top rated Kiwi Balance Vector team.
Balance Vector is the former Seagate team led by Nathan Fa’avae and includes George Christison and Kristina Anglem. It is tipped as a front runner for the championship title after clocking some impressive results last year.
Team Queenstown is made up of high profile athlete Hayden Key who was in the Seagate team last year, long time racer Bas Smith, and Willie and Wendy Roberts who have all competed in previous Southern Traverse events.
Team Swazi includes QLDC waste minimisation officer Linda Wright, who is teamed up with Bruce Webster of DOC in Queenstown and Wanaka policeman Mike Johnston and Dr Andrew McLeod also of Wanaka , who all have Southern Traverse experience.
Veteran racer Eric Billoud will be a key member of the Routeburn Canyoning team led by massage therapist Mitch Murdoch-Gary and including canyon guide Gordon Watson and Karl Boomsma of Hawea.
The Queenstown Night ‘n’ Day team has been reformed and includes river guide and snowmaker Vic Addison. Competing with her is Taz Dawson who last raced in the team at the 2003 Southern Traverse in Dunedin, project manager Craig Hart and ski instructor Gavin McAuliffe.
The Queenstown teams join a number of New Zealand teams and a diverse selection of international teams representing USA, Canada, Australia, France, Poland, Czech, South Africa, Sweden, Finland, Brazil, Holland, Chile, Spain, UK, Guatemala, Croatia, Russia and Japan.
Mr Hunt says selection was particularly tough because of the calibre of so many of the teams.
"Several teams had to miss out which has obviously been disappointing for them, but most have indicated they will now focus on qualifying for the 2006 World Championship."
He says the final line up is the strongest ever at a world championship race.
"It’s an incredible showcase of adventure racing talent. The West Coast will offer an enormous challenge and for many competitors it will be the toughest course they’ve ever taken on."
"We have all the winners and second place getters from the qualifying races which points to the huge interest in competing in a world championship such as this one.
There are still three qualifying events to be held - the Appalachian Extreme, the Wilderness ARC in Scotland and Terra Incognita in Croatia. Teams can still win a spot in the 2005 Adventure Racing World Championship by competing in these events."
Top contenders for the 2005 World Championship title will include Balance Vector which is internationally recognised as one of the best. The team will be throwing down the gauntlet to high profile teams such as Nokia (Finland) Cross Sportswear (Sweden) Saab Solomon (UK) Nike AGC Balance Bar (USA), Go Lite Timberland (USA) and Kiwi teams Merrell, Kathmandu and Bridgedale Socks (NZ).
