Transition Vest
Paddling has not been my main priority this fall, but when the new Transition Vest arrived it prompted me to drag the spider webs from the boat and join some friends for an early morning Sunday paddle on Lake Wakatipu.
I was surprised when I slipped the vest on - it’s much smaller and lighter than the old Day 2 vest I had been using. We were not out for long but the adjustable water tube holder on the front attracted some attention from the paddling companions, and the key attachment in the front pocket will ensure that the vehicle shuttle will happen according to plan.
Good side pockets for carrying those Leppins and the sticky left overs
Zone Jacket
Cardrona - it’s sunny but windy - the first chance to use the new Zone Jacket.
Immediately I put it on my daughter demanded one for herself - sorry.
So onto the double chair, and I take the time to adjust the hood and I’m soon tucked in and zipped up. The top of the zip has a fleece flap that protects the chin in these situations. (really fantastic)
I only had a few layers on underneath but the reflex single layer worked great and I was well protected from the wind. No zephyrs could sneak through the flap covered waterproof zip either.
The jacket yet to be tested bashing through some rugged New Zealand bush (that is this weekend as I finish a final check of the Southern Traverse course), but already this jacket has now found a ready home in my Amp pack as my first choice jacket.
Essence Pants
Spring skiing on Coronet - the year of ‘03 will go down as one of the best. When the mega snows finally stopped a few hot days turned it on. Too hot for the regular ski pants, but a light weight poly and the Essence pants over top proved perfect. Looked good in Joe’s coffee bar afterwards as well (and that’s important).
Seriously though - these pants with the long lower leg side zips enabling them to be slipped on over the shoes, are going to see a hard life during the Southern Traverse checkouts in ‘04 (folded up into the back pocket, and dropped in the bottom of the pack, and then pulled out for when the going gets rough, or around the campfire at night).
Amp 35 Pack
Why did I not have one of these in every adventure race and ST checkout for the last 10 yrs. Pulled out of the garage now - it comes loaded. Ready to pick up and run with.
GPS, note pad, 3 Leppins, pencil, toilet paper (never know when you are going to need this), and bumper bar - sit in one top pocket.
In the waterproof zip pocket on the back is the compulsory gear - space blanket, whistle, 1st aid kit, mirror etc.
So it sits ready for action anytime - it has seen it too. Swam and coasteered along the Otago coastline, carried on the back during the mtn bike forest checkouts, and on a quick (6hr) run through one stage checkout in the Silver Peaks behind Dunedin. Running it was great - sat quiet on the back with all the adjustments tweaked up.
Won’t go out without it now.
