Port Nelson proved amateurs can foot it with the best in the world when the team led by Paul Chaplow kept their cool throughout the race to cross the line in fourth place at 4.21pm.
He says they never believed they would finish so well and at times had to pinch themselves when they were running second.
Lisa Savage says the best thing they could do was move steadily along and not make mistakes.
"We just stayed race smart and stuck to our game plan. Everyone was making nav mistakes all around us. We'd even pass people going the other way."
She says there were some tough moments and she was ill for the first day which didn't help.
But they were determined and their determination paid off. The last trek saw them wiped out at the top and it took them longer to come down from Kirwans than they expected.
All up Port Nelson had around six hours sleep.
"In hindsight we should have had more particularly at Kirwans," says Lisa.
The Swedish Halti team crossed the line shortly after Port Nelson at 4.34pm. Captain Mikael Nordstrom, himself a race director, was full of praise for navigator Sara Wallen.
"She is brutal, the best navigator I've ever raced with."
He says the race was very tough and the bush quite unlike anything they race in in Sweden.
"We are very happy to be here in fifth."
He says it was an exciting race because seven or eigtht teams were always jostling for position.
"Sometimes you were up and sometimes you were down, either depression or happiness." |
