GoLite Timberland take third

19-Nov-2005 16:10:30

Kiwi/US team GoLite Timberland made it to the end of the 2005 Adventure Racing World Championship in third place at 2.44pm.

Team captain William Mattison says he was so tired he could not think straight after only six and a half hours sleep but he had enjoyed the race.

They had been worried about the gorse and some of the steep terrain they had to cover.

"We were in the middle of it (gorse) after going 100 metres in half an hour and we thought maybe this is not paying off." Mattison said.

The team made it to the transition at the end of the trek through the Paparoa's and were told they were in third place.

"That was a high for us."

Mattison says they made some mistakes and tried some things that did not work but made it to the finish in the end.

"We tipped over in our kayak leaving the beach at the start. Me and Jamie were the very last people to leave the beach. . .not a good way to start."

Team member Anna Keiling says it was a race for second place to the last minute.

"But third is a bit of a dream come true for the likes of myself."

GoLite Timberland is followed by Port Nelson and Swedish team Halti who are racing down the beach to the finish.
