Balance Vector New World Champions |
| 18-Nov-2005 23:27:44 |
| |
Balance Vector is the 2005 World Adventure Racing Champion team after crossing the finish line at Tauranga Bay near Westport fifteen hours ahead of their nearest rival.
It was an emotional moment for the team with legendary adventure racing personalities Nathan Fa'avae and Kristina Anglem retiring from the sport.
"It is the end of an era, it is a big day for us," says Richard Ussher.
Anglem says she was eleated to cross the line first in the 46 strong field. "It is always emotional coming into the finish line but because this is my last race I feel even more emotional."
She paid tribute to the team unit which was "wicked."
"We have been in each others faces 24/7 and we have gone through so much challenge, torture and pain together."
She says the weather was very cold for much of the time which had a big impact.
The team took the lead from day one and never looked like faltering. Each day they increased their lead further and it became obvious early on that barring accidents they would take the title.
The team did not like the 'bush bashing' too much but clearly loved the ropes section with a stunning abseil on the Charleston Cliffs.
"I am so pleased that was on the last day. It's good to go away with good memories rather than memories of all that monkey scrub. That's really I guess why we keep doing these races," says Ussher
The team slept for just 6.5 hours in over 100 hours of racing.
"It's staggering wehat the body can achieve, really," says Anglem.
Balance Vector wins the 2005 title and $50,000 in prize money.
